Well, faithful subscribers, it’s been 15 months since my last blog post, so here’s an update….
I started in the insurance industry in June 1969, over 56 years ago, though the news of my arrival was somewhat overshadowed by some guys who decided landing on the moon a month later was bigger news. I worked part-time for 4 years while getting a degree in fire protection and safety engineering, then entered the insurance industry full-time doing underwriting, rating, and loss control inspections for insurers.
After getting my CPCU designation in 1980, I transitioned into an insurance coverage geek where I’ve spent the past 37+ years writing and speaking about insurance industry and coverage issues many thousands of times. At the end of 2016, I moved into semi-retirement and started this blog and wrote 6 books. I still continue to write columns for two industry magazines and speak occasionally at conventions and conferences, along with a few webinars most years.
Over the past few years, there has been less and less “semi” in my semi-retirement. This coming spring I’ll be 75 years old. As far as I know, I’m still in excellent health, partially because I now have a different doctor for pretty much every organ in my body. Currently, I spend more time on music than insurance. I’m now in two bands. My band of the past 7-8 years, The Spyders, has moved from being a classic rock cover band to performing mainly original material. After months of rehearsals, my new band, The Code Blues Band, will make its official premiere performance in January.
So, I think it’s time for me to move from “SEMI” to “semi” retirement by limiting my insurance activities and focusing more on music, travel, and family. I have renewed my web site for one more year while I make this transition and repurpose the content. As many of you know, I’ve been a monthly columnist for Insurance Journal magazine since my full-time retirement and they have offered to set up a section of their web site to house most of my existing blog content. Presumably this area will also provide direct access to the many dozens of columns I’ve written over the years and will hopefully to continue to write.
Folks like me seem to be a dying breed (preferably figuratively speaking rather than the alternative), especially given the impact that AI is sure to make in the coming years. But the industry still needs coverage experts and idea people to QC what AI tells you. For now, I’m not completely going away. I will continue to write (I often comment almost daily on LinkedIn) and occasionally speak on industry and coverage issues.
In the meantime, please feel free to keep in touch by email, by Following me on LinkedIn for insurance stuff, and Friending me on Facebook for music and less serious stuff. Below is a list of ways you can keep in touch. If you’re on Facebook and you like music, it would be great if you followed my bands…venue owners like to see lots of band followers even though apparently they aren’t aware that many of these followers might be in Montana or Aruba and not Nashville.

I’m also working on 3 new books, one on insurance, one co-written with my son for high school graduates about succeeding in college and beyond, and a cookbook for people who can’t cook :-). The insurance book has the working title “The History, Evolution and Meaning of CGL Property Damage Coverage and Exclusions,” a real page turner!
See you later!

thank you for your email….praying your days are blessed and full of joy
Having been in this trade for 44 years, of which the vast majority have included you, Mr. Bill! We have been the beneficiary of untold commentaries over the years, I have enjoyed 2 of your books & look forward to more. Good luck to you! Robert Hempkins
Congrats, Bill. You’ve certainly earned a full and rewarding retirement given the years of insights we’ve all gained from you. Best of luck!
Bill –
A catchy tune will outlive any insurance commentary!!
Proud to see you shifting gears – but not forgetting insurance. Keep in touch with your policy reading friends.
Bill….I love your blogs but completely understand about the “semi” retired. The industry doesn’t seem to be replacing the old insurance geeks, and we so badly need people who understand coverage and know how to read policies. Sadly, many don’t understand what the big deal is, since they think AI will always have the answers they need. 🙁
Enjoy the golden years and share a nugget of your wisdom from time to time!
Bill, Thanks you for all your great newsletters, service to the industry, and teaching! I’ve truly enjoyed reading your posts over the past decades (!), and I will always carry your mantra #RTFP. Wishing you all the best!
Comes a time when all things must pass. (RIP George) Your contributions to the insurance industry have been second to none and you will be missed. Best of luck with your continued venture into the world of live music and let’s hope that it too is not a dying breed as well.
Thank you for your humor and wisdom. We will be forever grateful for the topics that you shared over those many years.
